Sen. Alexander Pushes for Meeting with Perry on Yucca

During Wednesday's Appropriations Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development hearing to examine the FY 2020 budget request for the Department of Energy (DOE) Chairman Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) informed DOE Secretary Rick Perry that he hopes to meet with him and other top senators within the next two weeks in order to discuss ways of solving an impasse over the Yucca Mountain nuclear repository that has dodged the appropriations process for years.

"If we don't collectively take action, what we have said to the American people is that we have decided on permanent disposal of high-level nuclear waste as it is in the 39 states where it resides today," Perry said.

Senator's Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) who also sit on the Energy and Water Appropriations Subcommittee agreed that the Yucca Mountain stalemate risks hindering the development of advanced nuclear technology. The full hearing can be viewed HERE.
