Nuclear Matters

Good things come in small reactors.
Happy Nuclear Innovation Week! We hope you’ll join in on the online (#NuclearInnovation) – and in-person – activities going on across the country.
We’re getting in the spirit by taking a closer look at one powerful component of nuclear innovation: small modular reactors (SMRs). These state-of-the-art devices are distinguished for their relatively small size; they are scalable, making it easier to stand up in places where larger plants can’t. When paired with traditional and other advanced reactors, SMRs can help power our future.

Your voice matters.
As we celebrate the innovative technologies shaping our industry this week, we need your help to remind legislators of the important technological, environmental, economic and secure benefits of nuclear energy. Make sure your legislators hear your support for nuclear energy this week!

  • NEI will host its annual state of the nuclear industry briefing tomorrow, Tuesday, March 26, at 9 AM EST. Join us to hear from NEI President and CEO Maria Korsnick on the growing momentum behind nuclear energy in America. Tune in with us!
  • All eyes are on Georgia this month. Nuclear Matters Advocacy Council Member David Gattie shared his thoughts on an important milestone in the construction of two new reactors at Plant Vogtle – the placement of the containment vessel top head. Join us in celebrating this moment!
  • Crucial legislation was introduced in Pennsylvania that would include nuclear energy in the state’s Alternative Energy Portfolio Standards, protecting PA’s clean energy supply and nuclear industry jobs for decades to come. Check out our full statement.
  • Utah passed a pro-nuclear energy resolution to support the construction and operation of advanced nuclear facilities in the state. With its population expected to double by 2050 paired with its goals to address climate change, Utah trusts nuclear energy to provide consistent, clean energy to the masses.
  • Andrew Klein, former president of the American Nuclear Society, penned an op-ed highlighting the risks Pennsylvania faces if nuclear energy is threatened and urging state legislators to support this crucial economic engine.
  • The weather has been wild, but nuclear energy is always up to the challenge. As states have been hammered by extreme winter weather, nuclear energy has been a stable, consistent and clean source of energy, keeping our homes and communities powered when it matters most.
  • Minnesota is the latest state to announce its commitment to 100% clean energy by 2050, and Xcel Energy knows that it can rely on nuclear energy to reach that goal.
  • Employees are the backbone of the industry. We can rely on the thousands of nuclear energy employees to bring power to the people each and every day.
