Four Nuclear Policy Issues to Watch
Congress recently began a two week recess, when it returns on April 29 we expect several nuclear issues to heat up.
  • Appropriations: Both the House and Senate Energy & Water Appropriations Subcommittees will begin marking up their bills in the next few weeks.
  • Nuclear Waste Legislation: It is expected that the, "Big 4" - Senators Alexander (R-TN), Feinstein (D-CA), Murkowski (R-AK), and Manchin (D-WV) will reintroduce the Nuclear Waste Policy Amendments Act sometime within the next few weeks.
  • Yucca Mountain: "This year, we should resolve the more than 30-year stalemate over how to dispose of used nuclear fuel," quoted Senator Alexander (R-TN) earlier this year. Alexander chairs the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Energy & Water Development and many in the DC nuclear policy community are expecting a full Senate vote on Yucca Mountain funding when the Energy and Water bill reaches the floor this summer.
  • NELA: A hearing on the Nuclear Energy Leadership Act is expected to take place at the end of April in front of the Senate Energy & Natural Resources Committee, moving the bill one step closer to a Committee business meeting vote and passage.
