Yesterday, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell filed cloture to proceed
on the five bill minibus that includes energy and water development
appropriations. The motion would require 60 votes in order to pass and
it's currently unclear if the bill would pass at this time. However,
there is continued momentum in the Senate to complete the appropriations
process in a timely manner.
The Senate version of the
energy and water development appropriations bill
includes $1.52 billion for nuclear energy research and development,
$192 million above the FY 2019 amount, and $694 million above the budget
request, for nuclear energy research, development, and demonstration
activities. This also includes funding for consolidated interim storage
of spent nuclear fuel.
