U.S. nuclear future depends on lifting federal mining ban in Ariz.
Interior Secretary Ken Salazar's January order protecting 1 million acres of federal land in Arizona makes the highest grade uranium ore in the U.S. unavailable to miners, according to lawsuits filed by two mining groups. Studies show no significant risk to the Grand Canyon watershed, and the projected increase in demand means that the uranium is needed, writes William Perry Pendley, president of Mountain States Legal Foundation. "If America is to have a nuclear energy future, a federal court, perhaps the Supreme Court of the United States, will have to issue the order opening the door to that future," he writes.
