Sellafield awards £47 million nuclear waste storage contract to UK manufacturer

Cambridgeshire manufacturer Metalcraft has won a contract to provide nuclear waste storage containers for Sellafield, in a contract worth up to £47 million.
For Metalcraft, phase one of the project is worth between £5.25 million and £8 million and covers the set up and development of a production facility that will produce over 1,000 storage boxes during phase two of the project, which will run over the next 10 years.
Sellafield, the company responsible for decommissioning of the UK’s nuclear legacy, said Metalcraft was chosen for its socio-economic commitments as well as for quality and value for money.
The manufacturer has committed to creating new jobs and apprenticeships and providing training development to advance the capability of manufacturing skills. It will also build a new facility in West Cumbria for the finishing of boxes for the phase two contract. Metalcraft will supply high-integrity stainless steel storage containers for nuclear waste. The three metre cube boxes will provide safe and secure storage for waste retrieved from the Pile Fuel Cladding Silo on the Sellafield site.
Sellafield managing director Paul Foster said: “We recognise that how we work with our supply chain can and should play a fundamental part in supporting socio-economic growth and ensuring that we remain the backbone of the community. Our investment in education, skills and infrastructure must be felt in West Cumbria and the wider UK economy.”

“By running a procurement which includes measurable socio-economic expectations right from the start we will be better placed to ensure that we add as much value as we can in this area, while still delivering on what is a vital decommissioning programme,” Foster said.
