We've spent the past half hour playing around with the Beta version of Enerdat, a new interactive chart site from the EIA showing data about the U.S. electricity sector (via Condor Options' Jared Woodward).
It's still very much in beta, but it definitely has the potential to be the government's next FRED (though of course, nothing can ever actually compare with FRED).
Enerdat's main virtue (so far) is its centralization of data. It took 10 seconds to come up with the following charts comparing electricity generation by source over the past decade.

Russian Gold!

Last week I discussed why the Russians might be asking the NRC for a Design Certification of the VVER. I concluded it had little to do with the supposed “gold standard” of certification the NRC provides. In reality the Russians need any independent certification to participate in the international market with smaller countries that lack resources to do their own certification.
Why should we care? Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Let’s look at the puts and takes.

U.S. declares drought-stricken states largest natural disaster area ever

July 12, 2012CLIMATE - The United States Department of Agriculture has declared natural disaster areas in more than 1,000 counties and 26 drought-stricken states, making it the largest natural disaster in America ever. The declaration—which covers roughly half of the country—gives farmers and ranchers devastated by drought access to federal aid, including low-interest emergency loans. “Agriculture remains a bright spot in our nation’s economy,” U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said Wednesday while announcing the assistance program. “We need to be cognizant of the fact that drought and weather conditions have severely impacted farmers around the country.” According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, more than half the country (56 percent) experienced drought conditions—the largest percentage in the 12-year history of the service. And according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the period from January through June was “the warmest first half of any year on record for the contiguous United States.” The average temperature was 52.9 degrees Fahrenheit, or 4.5 degrees above average, NOAA said on Monday. Twenty-eight states east of the Rockies set temperature records for the six-month period. A heat wave blistered most of the United States in June, with more than 170 all-time temperature records broken or tied during the month. On June 28 in Norton, Kan., for instance, the temperature reached 118 degrees, an all-time high. On June 26, Red Willow, Neb., set a temperature record of 115 degrees, eclipsing the 114-degree mark set in 1932. -Yahoo

Final approval of an $8.3 billion loan guarantee for the construction of two new reactors at Plant Vogtle in Georgia won't materialize until the end of the year, at the earliest, Department of Energy officials told House members Thursday.
In a hearing of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, loan guarantee program chief David Frantz said that none of the program's pending applications are officially scheduled to close this year, Dow Jones reported. While DOE does not set concrete deadlines for finalization of nuclear plant loan guarantees, another DOE official said late 2012 would be the soonest the Vogtle guarantee would be issued.

NRC Enhances its Fight Against Counterfeits

by Moderator
Following the signing ceremony on July 11, 2012, IPR Center Director Lev Kubiak (left) and NRC Office of Investigations Director Cheryl L. McCrary (right) exchanged seals at the IPR Center.
Counterfeit Gucci bags are bad news. So are fraudulent money-making schemes and substandard materials used in your home repair. But counterfeit, fraudulent and suspect parts and equipment are particularly bad news from the viewpoint of the NRC’s Office of Investigations when it comes to keeping people and the environment safe from wrongdoers.
So this week, the NRC became the 21st partner agency to the National Intellectual Property Rights Coordination Center. The Center is run by the Homeland Security Investigations unit of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, a part of the Department of Homeland Security. This collaboration puts the NRC at the table with other federal and international law enforcement agencies.
The supply chain in the nuclear industry has changed considerably with globalization, and that requires that we change with it. We’re talking about a vast array of parts and equipment coming not only from within the United States, but also from overseas. For parts and supplies destined for the nuclear industry, such as valves, circuit breakers, and steel, we have to work closer with other law enforcement agencies to identify and investigate the bad actors.
While reports of this kind of substandard manufacturing have not been common, the trend toward a more globalized supply chain creates new challenges in the fight against the potential introduction of counterfeit parts into the nuclear industry.
We take our mission of protecting people and the environment seriously and recognize the validity of this potential problem. Partnering with the IPR Center is a proactive initiative designed to fight this type of wrongdoing and to minimize any potential negative impact it may have on public health and safety.
This new collaboration will immediately enhance information sharing between us and the partner agencies. It allows us to more effectively identify bad actors and coordinate investigative resources amongst the participating agencies. This gives us an early alert to potential problems, and extra eyes and ears around the world.
Substandard parts can potentially disrupt the safe operation of a plant or devices with a nuclear source. That can’t happen. Parts and equipment must work as intended. Our new partnership gives us a new, improved tool in the fight to keep America safe.
Cheryl McCrary

French nuclear conglomerate Areva has now confirmed it will bid to buy the UK’s Horizon Nuclear Power from its German owners, but Westinghouse, General Electric Hitachi and Rosatom, to various degrees, remain coy on their own plans.
An Areva spokesman confirmed to i-NUCLEAR July 12 that it will put forward a bid for Horizon, which owns two sites for new reactors in the UK and has done a lot of predevelopment work on the sites before abandoning its UK nuclear plans.
That work included investigating the construction of both the Westinghouse AP1000 and the Areva EPR reactors.

Candu proposal would see four reactors burning MOX in Pu disposition program for NDA

by I-Nuclear
The Candu Energy proposal to the UK Nuclear Decommissioning Authority for plutonium disposition envisions the use of four 700-MWe, generation III, Enhanced Candu 6 (EC6) reactors running on up to 100% mixed-oxide (MOX) fuel cores, a company spokeswoman said.
In less than 30 years, the four EC6 reactors could burn through the UK’s 112 tonnes of plutonium and then be available for another 30 years to run on more conventional fuels, reprocessed uranium stocks or more advanced fuels.
Candu Energy spokeswoman Katherine Ward said July 12 that the exact configuration of reactors and fuel mix would be considered in more detail as part of the study the NDA has contracted Candu Energy to perform.
