Shorting the Grid: The Hidden Fragility of Our Electric Grid is Widely Available!

Shorting was published on October 19. I definitely need to do a catch-up post with some links to podcasts and so forth. I have been on some great podcasts (the latest with Robert Bryce) and the book has had some excellent reviews posted at Amazon and Goodreads.

Meanwhile, you can buy Shorting on Amazon (Kindle and softcover and hardcover), Kobo (ebook), Walmart, Books A Million and more. In the approximately two weeks since its release on Amazon, the book has been the #1 New Release in Oil and Energy Industry, Energy Policy, and Electric Energy. (The Electric Energy banner is shown in the graphic above.) You can also order the book through your local bookstore, since it is distributed by Ingram Spark.

Praise Updates:

In my last email, I quoted John McClaughry of the Ethan Allen Institute as below.

"Shorting the Grid ...(is) not likely to make the New York Times Best Seller List, but it will certainly prove to be the gold standard for anyone working to keep the lights on, who needs to know how electric power is produced, distributed, and priced."

However, I was not able to provide a link to his review at that point, because the review was published in a newsletter for members. McClaughry's opinion is important, because he was looking at the book as a former legislator. So I published McClaughry's review on my blog, and you can read it here.

Also as I mentioned last time, Rod Adams, a long-time friend and pronuclear blogger, interviewed me on his podcast. In the blog post about the podcast, Adams wrote: "It belongs in the library of every congressional and senatorial office..." This statement ties in well with my comments about McClaughry's review, above.

One great thing about Rod's blog is that it attracts truly excellent comments. One man commented that he had been afraid that Shorting would be a repeat of Ted Koppel's' Lights Out book, and he was reassured to learn that my book is quite different. My book is about the slow catastrophe of a grid that is less and less reliable, and rolling blackouts that are more and more common. Shorting is not about cyberattacks and EMP pulses, though those are important subjects. It's about ruining the grid by steadily making bad rules and bad decisions.

Recent Praise

I was recently on Robert Bryce's Power Hungry podcast. This was a great podcast. Bryce asked so many important questions. It deserves an entire email, and I will send one! But for now, this email is long enough.

Buy the book

Be well. Be happy. Buy my book.

Crews Demolish 10th And Final Building at ETEC Radioactive Materials Handling Facility

A crew tears down a stack attached to Building 4022 at the Radioactive Materials Handling Facility (RMHF) at the Energy Technology Engineering Center. Teardown of the structure marked the completion of demolition of a set of 10 buildings at the RMHF.

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. – Workers accomplished one of EM’s 2020 priorities today after safely tearing down the last of 10 buildings at the Radioactive Materials Handling Facility (RMHF) at the Energy Technology Engineering Center (ETEC) in Ventura County, California.

DOE and the State of California signed a consent order in May to demolish the 10 DOE-owned buildings at ETEC. Crews at the former nuclear and liquid metals research site started active cleanup on July 21.

Leading up to the significant cleanup milestone, workers made swift progress safely demolishing four buildings in the first week, and three in the subsequent week. By September, the eighth and ninth buildings — a small waste storage and packaging facility, and a building for low-level waste packaging, processing, decommissioning of parts, and laundry — were taken down at RMHF.

A crew took down the tenth building, a materials storage and processing site, today.

“I’m thrilled that despite hurdles like the COVID-19 pandemic, our crews were able to deliver on EM’s commitment to complete this phase of demolition at ETEC safely, and on time," said ETEC Federal Project Director John Jones, who is leading the effort for EM.

"A lot of painstaking preparation went into reaching this milestone," Jones added. "And we’ll continue to work with the State of California to get the ETEC site to final cleanup and completion."

Removing all 10 RMHF facilities, which were constructed in 1959 and used for the processing, packaging, and shipment of radioactive and mixed hazardous wastes during site operations that ended in 1988, reduces potential risk of release of hazardous substances due to wildfires or erosion from severe storms.

ETEC, located in Area IV of the Santa Susana Field Laboratory, served as a premier research facility from the 1950s until the end of active operations. Since the 1980s, more than 250 structures on the site have been demolished and removed.

With the completion of demolition of the 10 buildings in the RMHF complex, only eight DOE structures remain at ETEC. On Nov. 4, DOE announced the signing of an Amendment to the May 2020 Order on Consent with the State of California to demolish those eight remaining DOE-owned buildings. The action will fulfill DOE’s commitment to complete building demolition at ETEC.
