Coast to Coast and Across the Electric System, Microgrids Provide Benefits to All

Coast to Coast and Across the Electric System, Microgrids Provide Benefits to All

At the most obvious level, microgrids could disrupt today’s utilities and their regulated-monopoly business model, because they challenge the centralized paradigm. In a nutshell, microgrids are localized power grids that have the ability to disconnect from the main, centralized grid to operate independently when the main power grid experiences disturbances. Energy Quote of the Day: Gas Plant Vote ‘Just More of the Same’ in California

Clean energy advocates in California were pretty excited two months ago when an administrative law judge told state utilities regulators they should look for preferred alternatives to approving a power purchase agreement for power from a new natural gas-fired plant in San Diego County. Alternatives like renewable energy, storage, efficiency and demand response. “This is a huge reversal

Germany Plans 26 New Coal-Fired Power Plants
The U.S. portfolio of electric power plants will continue to shift in 2015, according to a federal assessment projecting that nearly 16 gigawatts (GW) of generating capacity will retire in 2015. Most of the capacity to be retired this year is coal-fired generation. http://breakingenergy.com/2015/05/22/coal-power-plants-retiring-in-2015/?utm_source=Breaking+Energy&utm_campaign=53b62b749d-RSS_EMAIL_CAMPAIGN&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f852427a4b-53b62b749d-407304281

Nuclear Matters at NEA 2015

Nuclear Matters was excited to take part in this year's Nuclear Energy Assembly, which attracted hundreds of advocates from across the nuclear industry - and the country - to Washington, DC, last week.

We kicked things off by hosting a reception with over 100 attendees from our Partner organizations. Former Energy Department Secretary Spencer Abraham and Former FERC Commissioner Vicky Bailey – both Nuclear Matters Leadership Council members – spoke to the crowd about continuing our collaborative advocacy efforts to preserve America's nuclear fleet.

Nuclear Matters was also on hand for the two-day event expo, where we recruited more supporters who share our goal of preserving existing nuclear facilities and the significant contributions they provide.

Our thanks goes to event hosts at The Nuclear Energy Institute and our Partners at North American Young Generation in Nuclear for helping make the week such a success!

- The Nuclear Matters Team

P.S. Be sure to visit the Nuclear Matters Twitter, Facebook and blog for shareable content to pass along to your friends and colleagues!

Two Steps Closer to National Consolidated Interim Storage Facility

Progress made on the interim option in the U.S. used nuclear fuel storage conversation …

On May 20, 2015, WCS and AREVA announced the signing of terms of agreement to develop a Consolidated Interim Storage Facility (CISF) in Texas to accept and store used nuclear fuel from U.S. reactors. This agreement details AREVA’s role and activities, including as the exclusive subcontractor for the design, development, construction, operation, and maintenance of the CISF project, and the transportation of used nuclear fuel and greater-than-Class C (GTCC) waste for the project.

On May 21, 2015, AREVA announced an agreement with NAC International to jointly support the licensing, design, construction and operation of the CISF project in Texas, led by WCS. Combined, AREVA and NAC represent 62 percent of existing dry storage systems in the U.S., including 78 percent of used nuclear fuel stored at sites where there is no longer an operating nuclear facility.

CNNC confirms buying share in French nuclear firm

CNNC confirms buying share in French nuclear firm

China National Nuclear Corp (CNNC) and China General Nuclear Power Group (CGN) are going to obtain stakes in French nuclear company Areva while another Chinese company is thinking about creating a joint venture, a CNNC employee told the Global Times on Thursday.

Chinese nuclear companies have already shown interest in cooperating with Areva, said an employee from the CNNC who refused to be named. "CNNC has been pushing forward cooperation with Areva in processing nuclear waste and developing safety-related control systems," he said, noting that CNNC will join French state-controlled power utility company Eléctricité de France SA (EDF) in seeking to reorganize the French nuclear sector.
