US and India Have Historic Opportunity to Fight Climate Change Together
Posted: 21 Sep 2013 05:00 AM PDT
President
Obama will host Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at the White House
next week. The United States and India have benefited from combined
efforts to address issues from national security to climate change. Now
these leaders have an opportunity to do more.http://theenergycollective.com/francesbeinecke/277476/us-and-india-have-historic-opportunity-fight-climate-change-together?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=The+Energy+Collective+%28all+posts%29
Hydro and Ocean Power: Untapped Renewable Resources? [WEBCAST]
Posted: 21 Sep 2013 06:00 AM PDT
Hydropower
is an efficient, predictable, and affordable source of energy that
produces no greenhouse gases and already generates a fifth of the
world's electricity - but is it an overlooked tool in the effort to meet
the world's growing energy needs sustainably? That's the question we
tackled last week in The Energy Collective's latest webcast with guests
Kai Kölmel, Vice President for Hydro & Ocean Power in the Solar
& Hydro Divison of Siemens AG, and William Rex, Lead Water Resources
Specialist at the World Bank.http://theenergycollective.com/277446/hydro-and-ocean-power-untapped-renewable-resources-webcast-recording?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=The+Energy+Collective+%28all+posts%29
Rooppur: Our potential future disaster SA Mansoor
Rooppur: Our potential future disaster
SA Mansoor
The government is all set to get a nuclear power plant built, using Uranium 236 as the reactor fuel at Rooppur in Pabna.Of utmost concern is that Russia, which is due to supply the nuclear power plant, experienced the biggest number of civilian fatalities, injuries and related radiation sickness following the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster in 1986.
Officially, many hundreds of people were killed, while the injuries and radiation sickness infected many thousands over generations as radiation cannot be “wished” away. The affected area is still out-of-bounds and will remain so for many years.
A similar disaster here could very well contaminate a quarter of Bangladesh’s land area. That we are considering such a power source under loan financing at a higher interest rate than other international loans, makes matters worse.

Rokkasho: nuclear white elephant or yen sucking black hole?
Rokkasho: nuclear white elephant or yen sucking black hole?
Two decades and $21 billion after construction commenced, Japan’s nuclear reprocessing and waste storage facility at Rokkasho may finally start operating in 2014, but probably later. There have been numerous delays and large cost overruns, but the operator, Japan Nuclear Fuel Ltd. (JNFL), is hopeful because Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has revived prospects for restarting nuclear reactors. The Japan Atomic Energy Commission and JNFL want to get the facility running as soon as possible, but the Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) is busy reviewing applications to restart 12 reactors based on the new safety guidelines issued in July 2013.

At its closing session, the General Conference delegates adopted resolutions aimed at strengthening the IAEA's work in the areas of nuclear science and technology, safety, security, safeguards and technical cooperation. The adopted resolutions will be posted on the Resolutions page of the GC57 Website as they become available.
Also at the General Conference, a special Scientific Forum on The Blue Planet, focusing on nuclear applications for sustainable marine environment was organized. The Forum highlighted the challenges presented by climate change and ocean acidification, as well as the role of nuclear applications in supporting a sustainable marine environment. Additionally, a number of side events on the Agency's work in areas such as nuclear energy, safety and security, nuclear sciences and applications and technical cooperation also took place.
Following are selected highlights from the week-long event:
The General Conference approved the applications of Brunei Darussalam and the Commonwealth of the Bahamas for membership in the IAEA. Membership will take effect once the appropriate legal instruments are deposited with the Agency. It also elected Mr. Xolisa Mfundiso Mabhongo of South Africa as President of the 57th IAEA General Conference.
The 57th General Conference approved by acclamation the reappointment of Director General Yukiya Amano for a further term of four years. Mr. Amano has held the top position at the IAEA since 2009.
The 2013 IAEA Scientific Forum on The Blue Planet - Nuclear Applications for a Sustainable Marine Environment, was conducted over a two day period, 17-18 September 2013. It featured presentations and discussions from scientists, experts and policy makers from various disciplines. The Forum's goal is to initiate dialogue and build new, cooperative partnerships to protect and preserve the ecological balance that is vital for the survival of coastal regions and the marine environment.
Exhibitions by IAEA Member States were displayed at the Vienna International Centre on national projects on the peaceful uses of nuclear applications, as well as its benefits for sustainable development.
On 19 September 2013, the General Conference elected 11 new countries to serve on the 35-member IAEA Board of Governors for the period 2013-2014. The newly elected Board members are Austria, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Finland, Kenya, Peru, Qatar, Slovakia, Sudan, United Arab Emirates, Venezuela, and Vietnam.
The 58th IAEA General Conference will be held from 15-19 September 2014 at the Agency's headquarters in Vienna, Austria.

Governing Energy: Strong vs.
Weak? The Strong vs. Weak Governance Bond construct is taken from nature—chemical and atomic bonding. All molecules and atoms have a weak attraction.
