Video Clip From V.C. Summer Shows Third Quarter Progress

SCE&G and its partners have announced third quarter progress made at the V.C.Summer construction site, where work continues on Units 2 and 3.

The heavy highlight for the third quarter was the placement of the on-site constructed CA01 building module inside the Unit 2 containment vessel. The module was built inside a 12-story high assembly building on the site and, when completed, comprised a stand-alone structure 90 feet long, 95 feet wide and 80 feet tall, according to construction site spokeswoman Rhonda O'Banion.

The weight of the module came to 2.4 million pounds. It was hoisted by the massive 560-foot long crane at the site.

Another boasting point, just prior to the module lift, was completion of the first 6-panel course in the Unit 2 shield building, which is to include 170 panels weighing 30,000 pounds. The panels are welded together and concrete poured to comprise the shield building that surrounds the containment vessel.

It was a busy quarter for concrete pours, as the new video clip reveals. The pours included construction of a nine-bay turbine building. One pour alone, the six foot thick basement pour for Bay No. 1 involved 2,100 cubic yards of concrete, according to the report. It took 27 hours to complete the pour. View Video>>>>

Westinghouse Pitches SMR Partnership With British Government And Industry

U.S.-based Westinghouse Electric Company has proposed a tie-in with the British government and British industry for development of its small modular reactor design in the United Kingdom.

The proposal involves joint ownership of efforts to bring the Westinghouse 225 MWe SMR design to fruition in Britain and beyond. The company said Wednesday that it had presented to the UK government a proposal to partner in the deployment of SMR technology, which could create for Britain a fundamental turnaround. Instead of being an importer of energy technology, the company said, Britain could become “a global provider.”

The proposal is intended to complement the current Phase 2 SMR study that was undertaken by the British government.

The timing could not be more poignant. The British government is expected to sign papers this week with China that would outline a massive deal that focuses on large nuclear power plants, including the long-delayed Hinkley Point C facility that is expected to cost approximately $37 billion.
