Study seeks to restructure nuclear safety rules
A
report unveiled by Nuclear Regulatory Commission experts proposes the
amendment of reactor safety rules over the next 10 to 15 years so that
they can better mitigate the risks associated with nuclear power. The
goal is to achieve uniformity "across the agency's activities," said NRC
Commissioner George Apostolakis, who is the lead author of the report.
Regulations could become stricter as a result, but "if we find that some
of the regulatory requirements are unjustified, they can be removed,"
he said. The New York Times (tiered subscription model)/Green blog
