Making the World Safe for Coal

Making the World Safe for Coal

The History of the Antinuclear Movement

{photo_credit}
The antinuclear movement has historically drawn from a number of wellsprings, from fears of radioactive fallout caused by nuclear missiles, to parallels between Nazi Germany and the science of nuclear energy, to paranoia over radiation as the ‘most serious agent of pollution.’ The success of such antinuclear campaigns in the 1970s has guaranteed a legacy of increased use of coal for decades to come, as proposed nuclear plants across the Western world were cancelled and replaced by coal plants.

Kent Hawkins Offers Reasonable Doubt About Wind's Carbon Mitigation Effectiveness (updated repost)

Kent Hawkins Offers Reasonable Doubt About Wind's Carbon Mitigation Effectiveness (updated repost)

Nuclear Green Revolution had its' origin in a debate which I had with GRIST'S David Roberts. Roberts argued that investments in nuclear power would be a mistake. When confronted with the need for post carbon power sources, Roberts claimed that renewables could provide all the power we need at a lower cost than nuclear power. I did not have a source that provided a strong contradiction, so I set out setting up a preliminary source from scratch. My source looked at what renewables cost and what we got for our money and what else it would take a renewable post carbon system to work. My conclusion was that renewables would be more expensive and far less reliable than nuclear power and the ability of renewables to mitigate CO2 discharges for energy was at best questionable.

The Nuclear Bad Time Story

The Nuclear Bad Time Story

Let’s take a step back, shudder, and look at a dire report from Mark Cooper of the Institute for Energy and the Environment at the Vermont Law School. Cooper releases reports like this occasionally, although why he continues to be interested in nuclear energy is difficult to pin down. He’s not trying to dispute the “lies” propagated by the industry nor try to show that nuclear energy does something other than it claims to do. He just sees the business crumbling into dust every couple of years – I guess that can qualify as an academic pursuit, even if it’s not exactly productive.

Virginia’s energy future

Virginia’s energy future
Small, modular reactors represent the future of nuclear power in Virginia. Coal continues to face challenges but has gotten a lot cleaner. And watch out for new technologies. They are harnessing alternative sources of energy such as thermo electric generation and breathing new life into existing sources such as water.

Those were some of the messages Thursday during a wide-ranging discussion on Virginia’s energy future at a forum in Richmond sponsored by The Thomas Jefferson Institute for Public Policy.

Finding energy sources to power our growing population and economy and meet that demand cleanly and responsibly… Keep reading →http://breakingenergy.com/2013/07/18/nuclear-energy-powering-an-environmentally-sustainable-future/?utm_source=Breaking+Energy&utm_campaign=bd5f1a4022-RSS_EMAIL_CAMPAIGN&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f852427a4b-bd5f1a4022-407304281

Heat Wave Shows Value of Nuclear Energy Facilities
Nearly All Nuclear Energy Plants Running at Full Power
WASHINGTON, D.C.—Richard Myers, the Nuclear Energy Institute’s vice president for policy development, planning and supplier programs, made the following comments today about nuclear energy’s value in periods of extreme weather.
“The high heat and humidity affecting tens of millions of Americans is a reminder of the continuing value of the nation’s nuclear energy facilities. For 20 years now, these facilities have consistently provided one-fifth of the nation’s electricity supplies, even as electricity demand has grown during that period. They are by far our nation’s most efficient and reliable generators of electricity. Their role grows in importance—especially to vulnerable populations like the elderly and those with respiratory issues—during periods of oppressive weather like the one we are experiencing.
“Vast sections of the country are seeing the highest electricity demand recorded this year as millions of air conditioners operate full blast to help Americans beat the heat. Electricity prices similarly are spiking as regional electricity markets in the Northeast and the mid-Atlantic call upon the full extent of generation reserves to help meet peak electricity demand.
“Throughout this week, all but a handful of the nation’s 100 reactors have been operating around the clock at full power. Demand for electricity in the United States has not yet returned to the level seen in 2007, before the financial crisis, but electricity demand is growing. We must take steps to ensure that our electric system can meet around-the-clock demand when economic growth and electricity demand truly rebound, particularly in the face of increasingly stringent regulations on carbon emissions from power plants.
“Nuclear energy facilities are by far the largest source of electricity that don’t emit greenhouse gases and other air pollutants; they provide nearly two-thirds of low-carbon electricity production in the United States. This week’s weather shows how much we need them.”

Germany Begins Bid To Find Site For High-Level Waste Repository

Germany Begins Bid To Find Site For High-Level Waste Repository

Waste Management
18 Jul (NucNet): The German parliament has passed a law which begins the formal procedure for a site to be found for a national repository for the country’s high-level radioactive waste.
After approval by the Bundestag, the law also passed the Bundesrat, which represents Germany’s 16 federal states at national level.

The law creates a 33-member commission to develop “basic principles” for site selection such as safety and economic requirements as well as selection criteria for rock formations.

The commission will consist of a chairperson, eight representatives from the Bundestag, eight from the Bundesrat, eight from academia, as well as two representatives each from civil society organisations of religious communities, industry, the environment and the trade unions.

To ensure maximum transparency, their meetings will be open to the public.

Southern California Edison SCE San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station SONGS MHI at fault for shutdown notice of dispute

Southern California Edison (SCE) served a formal notice of dispute to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), claiming the company's design and manufacturing of the replacement steam generators led to the shut down of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS), according to Electric Light & Power/POWERGRID International.
Although Mitsubishi warranted the generators would operate reliably for 20 years, SCE was required to take SONGS offline in January 2012 when one of the Mitsubishi RSGs experienced a radioactive coolant leak after less than a year of operation. Although its contract with SCE required Mitsubishi to repair the generators “with due diligence and dispatch,” SCE’s notice of dispute alleges that Mitsubishi failed to do so.
