Their View: Keep nuclear plants operating in Illinois - Alton Telegraph

Their View: Keep nuclear plants operating in Illinois - Alton Telegraph: Two Illinois nuclear power plants, Byron and Dresden, are due for premature closure this year. The two plants are licensed to operate for another 10 to 20 years, but have been slated for closure in September and November. Illinois lawmakers must act, and act now, to prevent this. Last year, Gov. Pritzker advocated for the passage of a comprehensive energy bill to put Illinois on a course for a carbon-free power industry, and importantly, 90% of Illinois' clean energy is currently produced by nuclear power. Byron alone generates enough power for more than 2.3 million homes. The two plants contribute about $3.5 billion to the state's GDP each year, and produce an estimated $149 million in tax revenues. Every year, consumers save nearly $313 million on their electricity bills due to the operation of the Byron and Dresden plants. The state will have to raise taxes, cut public services and or build new natural gas plants to make up for the loss in revenue. Locally, the Byron school district's budget relies on the millions of dollars a year in property revenue generated by the plant, which accounts for around 70% of its budget. Similarly, 17% of the county's economy derives from th

PUBLIC BRIEFING: Accelerating Decarbonization of the U.S. Energy System

PUBLIC BRIEFING: Accelerating Decarbonization of the U.S. Energy System We are excited to announce that Professor Kelly Sims Gallagher is a co-author of an important new study being released on Tuesday by the U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. graphic with text: ACCELERATING DECARBONIZATION OF THE UNITED STATES ENERGY SYSTEM Please join Gallagher and other co-authors for a public briefing on the technology, policy, and societal dimensions of accelerating decarbonization in the U.S. on Tuesday, February 2, 2021 from 2 - 3pm ET. Learn more about the study here. Registration Required This event is a public briefing. Feel free to share with others! About this National Academies event The world is transforming its energy system from one dominated by fossil fuel combustion to one with net-zero emissions of carbon dioxide, the primary anthropogenic greenhouse gas. This energy transition is critical to mitigating climate change, protecting human health, and revitalizing the U.S. economy. To help policymakers, businesses, communities, and the public better understand what a net-zero transition would mean for the United States, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine convened a committee of experts to investigate the technology, policy, and societal dimensions of accelerating decarbonization in the U.S. Join us for a public briefing webinar on Tuesday, February 2, 2021 from 2-3pm ET on a new report that outlines the key technological and socio-economic goals that must be achieved to put the United States on the path to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. During the webinar, members of the committee will discuss critical near-term policies needed for the decarbonization effort, including ways to support communities that will be most impacted by the transition. Learn more about the study on the National Academies' website. Connect with CIERP & CPL Subscribe to the Climate Smart blog here! ANS Nuclear Policy Wire January 27, 2021 Senate Committee Considers Nomination of Jennifer Granholm for Secretary of Energy Today, the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources held a hearing to consider the nomination of former Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm to be Secretary of Energy. Some notable highlights from today's hearing included Sen. Sen. Barrasso (R-WY) acknowledged that nuclear energy is the “largest source of carbon-free electricity” in the country while also underscoring the importance of the uranium reserve. Sen. King (I-ME) expressed his concern over stranded nuclear waste across the U.S. and highlighted the importance of addressing waste storage. Senator Cortez Masto (D-NV) followed Sen. King by asking for, and receiving, a commitment from Granholm that the Biden administration oppose the use of Yucca Mountain for long-term spent fuel storage. Granholm also stated that she will support recommendations of the Obama-era Blue Ribbon Commission, particularly on consent-based interim storage. Click HERE to watch today's nomination hearing.
