Approval Of New Framework ‘Paves Way For Next Generation Reactors’ :: The Independent Global Nuclear News Agency

Approval Of New Framework ‘Paves Way For Next Generation Reactors’ :: The Independent Global Nuclear News Agency: The US nuclear regulator’s unanimous approval of a licensing framework for advanced non-light water reactors paves the way for regulatory reviews to be aligned with the safety characteristics and simplified designs of Generation IV advanced reactors, the Washington-based Nuclear Energy Institute has said.

On 26 May the Nuclear Regulatory Commission voted 4-0 to approve the implementation of a more streamlined and predictable licensing process for advanced non-light water reactors.

This approach is consistent with the Nuclear Energy Innovation and Modernisation Act (NEIMA), which was passed last year by Congress and signed into law by president Donald Trump in January.

Iran says it will continue nuclear work despite US sanctions - SFChronicle.com

Iran says it will continue nuclear work despite US sanctions - SFChronicle.com: TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran said Friday its experts would continue nuclear development activities, despite sanctions imposed earlier this week on their fellow scientists by the United States. State TV cited a statement from the country’s nuclear department saying the U.S. decision to impose sanctions on two Iranian nuclear scientists indicate continuation of a “hostile” attitude. It said the sanctions would make them “determined to continue their nonstop efforts more than before." The statement said the sanctions violate international law. On Wednesday, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo imposed sanctions on two officials with Iran’s atomic energy organization, Majid Agha’i and Amjad Sazgar, who are involved in the development and production of centrifuges used to enrich uranium. Pompeo also said he would revoke all but one of the sanctions waivers covering civil nuclear cooperation. The waivers had allowed Russian, European and Chinese companies to continue to work on Iran’s civilian nuclear facilities without drawing American penalties. Waivers that permitted work at the Arak heavy water plant and the Tehran Research Reactor had been in place until now. A waiver for work at the Bu

Parliamentary inquiry concludes 'nuclear is the safest form of energy' | Sky News Australia

Parliamentary inquiry concludes 'nuclear is the safest form of energy' | Sky News Australia: “Nuclear is the safest form of energy” according to a parliamentary inquiry, which Liberal parliamentary committee chair Ted O'Brien says “accounted for every possible energy you could imagine”.

The parliamentary inquiry used information from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and compared a variety of different energy producing technologies including coal, gas, wind, solar and oil.

Mr O’Brien said the inquiry also took into consideration the Fukushima and Chernobyl incidents and still concluded “nuclear is the cleanest”.

“The real insight here is not that nuclear is safe and clean, but rather the disparity and the divergence between people’s perception and the evidence”.

Mr O’Brien told Sky News host Chris Kenny nuclear energy had been painted in a negative light by “pop culture” for years which had resulted in the infiltration of “too much false logic” into the energy debate.

“Forget the ideology… and let’s stick to the evidence,” he said.

We have “140 different technologies on the table” and the potential for small module nuclear reactors in particular is “really exciting”.
