Seattle Chosen to Host 2014 National Celebration of Nuclear Science

Good Morning!

I'm excited to share the news that Seattle has been chosen to host National Nuclear Science Week's Big Event this year. We will be focusing on contemporary issues including environment and social justice, and working with local artists to create a unique event that reaches populations far beyond the nuclear sector.

There are sponsorship opportunities available. Let me know if you would like more information on how to get involved! Full text from the press release is below.

Seattle Chosen to Host 2014 National Celebration of
Nuclear Science

Albuquerque, NM -- National Nuclear Science Week (NNSW) is a national, broadly observed recognition of how nuclear science plays a vital role in the lives of Americans - and the world. NNSW, a celebration to focus local, regional and national interest on all aspects of nuclear science, will be recognized for the fifth year on October 20-24, 2014, in Seattle, Washington.
The NNSW steering committee, which is comprised of individuals and corporations from all over the nation who work within the nuclear industry, chose Seattle as the host city for the week’s largest celebration event. Activities during the week are intended to encourage education, participation and communication around the contributions of the nuclear science industry and those who work in it every day.
With the help of the Nuclear Literacy Project and the American Nuclear Society (ANS) Eastern Washington Section and ANS Puget Sound Section, many aspects of nuclear technology, innovation and energy will be endorsed in a variety of impactful and engaging ways. Interested parties and students of all ages will experience workshops, panels and reception events that explore the intersections of nuclear technologies and our rapidly changing world.
“Since its inception five years ago, this national nuclear science celebration has grown exponentially each year,” said Jim Walther, the Director of the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History. “The contributions of nuclear science are many, and recognizing the importance of nuclear innovations in medicine, energy and social responsibilities is crucial in providing the public with pertinent information about our future as a nation.”
In addition to the regional presence of multiple nuclear organizations and corporations, Seattle also provides a venue that values the arts, embraces technology and celebrates its environment and place on the planet. Through collaborations with regional artists and technology organizations, within a diverse community that includes both strong pronuclear and antinuclear voices, NNSW will provide a platform that will open an active and constructive dialogue about nuclear technologies of all kinds.
National Nuclear Science Week is a partnership between the host organization, the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and nuclear industry partners, including the Nuclear Literacy Project, SRS Community Reuse Organization, Nuclear Energy Institute, Entergy, the US Department of Energy, the American Nuclear Society and the Society of Nuclear Medicine & Molecular Imaging.

The National Museum of Nuclear Science & History is located at 601 Eubank SE in Albuquerque, New Mexico, at the entrance to the Sandia Science & Technology Park. Formerly the National Atomic Museum, which opened in 1969 and was chartered by Congress in 1991, the Museum serves as a repository and steward of nuclear-related historical items and is a Smithsonian affiliate. The Museum is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. 361 days a year. The Museum’s website is www.nuclearmuseum.org and the phone number is 505-245-2137.
