The Future of Nuclear Power: Cheaper and Safer?

The Future of Nuclear Power: Cheaper and Safer?

Mar. 29 2011 -
The Fukushima Plant remains in the news, but that doesn’t mean that nuclear power is a dead issue.  The Week, for example, has a nice primer about the potential of replacing the uranium in nuclear plants with thorium.  This has a number of benefits, not the least of which is the simple fact that thorium plants can’t melt down, and the thorium used in power plants can’t be weaponized.  (Thanks to Michael Anissimov for the link.)
Another alternative, as Ernest Moniz of MIT’s Energy Initiative points out, is replacing current nuclear designs with smaller, modular reactors.
