There is another part of the story about recovery of uranium from phosphate ores. There have been continued concerns about uranium contamination in fertilizer--particularly with respect to tobacco where the product is smoked and its an inhaled dose. If uranium removal from phosphate ore looks economic, there will be enormous political pressure to require uranium removal to avoid uranium in fertilizer. At the same time, the resistance of the phosphate industry would disappear. One could get a lot of byproduct uranium dumped on the market. As a side note, there are a couple of parallel processes for removing uranium from other minerals that are processed--if we have really seen a major improvement in the technology, people will be looking at byproduct recovery from a couple of other types of mining.\.
