The topic that dominated the public debate in Delhi during my visit was the city government’s “odd-even scheme,” under which even (odd) numbered cars were only allowed to hit the road on even-numbered dates. The scheme was a pilot that lasted only for two weeks.read more

The Act effectively declares that human beings have a moral obligation not to so fundamentally alter the Earth that we drive other native species on our planet extinct, recognizing that what affects the web of life will inevitably affect us too. read more

There are a number of visionary sections of the book that appeal to me. However, I was not surprised to find out that the book takes a strong position in opposition to nuclear energy. I’ve long been aware of S. David Freeman, his career in the electricity production enterprise, and his forty-fifty year old position on nuclear energy. read more

The science is clear; the oceans are saving us from catastrophe and have the capacity to continue to do so if their ability to produce energy through ocean thermal energy conversion and to absorb heat at depth is fully exploited. No other replacement for fossil fuels alleviates the escalating problem of ocean heat and in fact virtually all other suggested energy alternatives exacerbate this problem.read more

Whenever I hear that environmental protection is a partisan issue, I'm reminded of New York City Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia's famous statement that there is no Democratic or Republican way to pick up the garbage. The provision of clean air, safe drinking water, solid waste management and flood control are all basic public services that people who pay taxes expect to receive. Too bad the folks running Flint, Michigan, and the state of Michigan didn't get that memo. It's also too bad that the federal Environmental Protection Agency sat on the sidelines and allowed Michigan to damage Flint's water supply.read more

Masson_main People’s Climate March, New York, 21 September 2014. Photo: istock/Andy Parker What does gender have to do with climate change? It’s a question I often hear when engaging with practitioners and policymakers. I am a researcher who advocates for attention to gender to be integrated in efforts to address climate change – in climate change mitigation, in strategies to adapt to climate impacts, and in negotiations towards a global climate change agreement.read more
