KHNP official urges reprocessing of South Korea's used fuel
A Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power official urged South Korea to reprocess its used nuclear fuel to address the country's problems with radioactive waste storage. "We have the know-how to safely reprocess used fuel," said the official, who asked not to be identified. "Although any action will depend on the outcome of ongoing negotiations [with the United States], reprocessing can also give the country some breathing room to cope with rapidly shrinking storage capacity for spent fuel that is expected to reach its limit in 2-3 years," the official said. Japan could find it hard to handle another complex nuclear disaster despite the safety measures implemented for reactors in the aftermath of the Fukushima Daiichi incident, according to a report from a government-appointed panel. "We understand that immediate safety measures are being further detailed and will materialize in the future. But we strongly urge the people concerned to make continued efforts to take really effective steps," the panel said. Reuters

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will be run "in a collaborative and collegial manner," Chairwoman Allison Macfarlane said in prepared testimony for a House committee hearing. "I have already begun to meet regularly with my commissioner colleagues, to seek their thoughts on major issues facing the agency, and to benefit from their expertise," she said. "I have also had the opportunity to meet a number of the dedicated staff at the NRC, who have begun to provide me with briefings on some of the important issues before the agency." Bloomberg

be built in the northeastern Brazilian state of Pernambuco in late
