Abstract

• Based on the statistics of surface drifter data of 1979–2011 and the simulation of nuclear pollutant particulate movements simulated using high quality ocean reanalysis surface current dataset, the transport pathways and impact strength of Fukushima nuclear pollutants in the North Pacific have been estimated. The particulates are used to increase the sampling size and enhance the representativeness of statistical results. [...] most pollutant particles move eastward and are carried by the Kuroshio and Kuroshio-extension currents and reach the east side of the North Pacific after about 3.2–3.9 years [...] the impact strength of nuclear pollutants at these time scales can be estimated according to the temporal variations of relative concentration combined with the radioactive decay rate. For example, Cesium-137, carried by the strong North Pacific current, mainly accumulates in the eastern North Pacific and its impact strength is 4% of the initial level at the originating Fukushima area after 4 years. [...]

CNN, Feb. 17, 2014: Radiation alarm at New Mexico nuclear disposal plant [...] a first-of-its-kind response at a nuclear disposal facility outside of Carlsbad, New Mexico, an Energy Department spokesman told CNN. An air monitor at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant detected the spike in an isolated area half a mile below the ground. The incident prompted an immediate shutoff of filtered air from the facility into the environment [...] “This is the first time we had to close off air filtered by the facility to the outside,” Energy Department spokesman Gregory Sahd told CNN. Is It Possible to Reduce 80% of Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Energy by 2050?

A variety of organizations and research groups have undertaken analyses in the last four years to suggest how greenhouse gas emissions could be reduced in the range of 80 percent. The studies vary significantly in the mix of energy efficiency improvements, electrification, energy storage, demand-side management, transmission, renewable energy, nuclear power, and fossil energy with carbon capture and storage, and how they provide for fuel demand. The critical assumptions made by each study differ as well. As a whole, these studies indicate that the global decarbonization challenge is much larger than often reckoned. The level and pace of energy system transformation required to meet even 80 percent carbon reduction targets is substantially higher than historical experience, removing any particular technology from consideration is likely to limit the chance of success, and substantial investments in research and development will be required to ensure a range of feasible decarbonization options. This session explores the decarbonization studies with a focus on making the assumptions explicit, relating them to historical experience, and describing key implementation hurdles and solutions. Most importantly, the session identifies the elements common to all the studies, as these are indicative of robust strategies, and highlights the differences to illuminate the kinds of technical, economic, and policy choices we face in reaching the goal of radical emission reductions.
