Carbon Storage or Use?

Posted: 19 Feb 2017 11:00 PM PST
Last week I was at a meeting of major industrial emitters and the discussion moved on to the subject of carbon capture. This shouldn’t have come as a surprise, but one aspect of it did; the context was entirely carbon capture and use (CCU) rather than carbon capture and storage (CCS). One participant did mention CCS, but corrected himself to CCU. 3 Big Energy Mistakes Not to Make in 2017, or Ever

As soon as Rick Perry is confirmed as the new Secretary of Energy and finds out where his office is, he will be deluged with requests—for policy changes or new policies, requests to hire somebody’s friend, to have a meeting with every interest group in town, to make speeches at conventions, to testify before various House and Senate committees, and on and on. Toshiba’s chairman, Shigenori Shiga, has accepted the responsibility for his company’s financial challenges and operating losses and resigned his position as chairman and as a board member. He remains an executive with the company. After some early confusion related to a discussion about its financial statements with its auditors, Toshiba has announced that it will report a loss of 390 billion yen, or $3.4 billion, for the fiscal year that ends in March 2017. Generation Atomic

Generation Atomic
Dear Michele, (you're going to want to allow these photos!)
After only two weeks of talking to regular folks right on their doorsteps-- it's clear.  All it takes to “convince” someone of the incredible economic and environmental benefits of nuclear energy is a bit of empathy, honesty, and courage.  The facts speak for themselves-- it’s just that hardly anyone has heard them.  And often, what they’ve heard about nuclear power is flat out wrong.  In short-- it’s the safest way to produce electricity [1], the used fuel is recyclable[2], and without it-- we’ve already lost the fight against climate change[3].
Amelia and Charlie, Gen A Organizers
(Organizers Amelia and Charlie -- being "adoorable")
This is why the work of Generation Atomic (Gen A) is so important.  Shortsighted energy policies and misguided fears have lead us to turn our backs on our largest source of clean energy.  In fact-- in the last 3 years, the US has lost nearly as much clean energy from abandoning nuclear as all of the solar we produced in 2015. This lost power was almost completely replaced with fossil fuels.
Five abandoned nuclear plants generated almost same amount of power as all US SolarThe good news? There are students and environmentalists from all over the country stepping up to defend these plants and lay the groundwork for advanced designs.

Are you the next one?

Sign down as a supporter of Generation Atomic to see a sneak peek of our upcoming app that amplifies nuclear advocacy -- Atomic Action.
With hope for the future,
Eric G. Meyer & Tay Stevenson
