Industry execs are upbeat on nuclear energy's prospects
Two
industry executives said they remain bullish about nuclear energy's
prospects one year after the Fukushima Daiichi incident in Japan. The
incident showed that nuclear plants are capable of handling natural
disasters, said Aris Candris, president and CEO of Westinghouse
Electric. Overall, the facility held up well against flooding, said

Global nuclear energy market will soon recover, Areva says
Interest in nuclear energy projects worldwide will soon recover, according to France's Areva. Several countries moved to abandon nuclear energy in the aftermath of the Fukushima Daiichi incident in Japan. "It has obviously slowed down a certain number of projects, but when we look now as a global situation, we think this will pick up soon," said Luc Oursel, Areva's president and CEO. Reuters

Energy Insider has an interesting article up on the decommissioning of
Illinois’ Zion facility outside Chicago. There are some details that
suggest how this kind of work might be done relatively quickly:The Zion decommissioning project will take considerably less time than originally planned because the cleanup will bypass one of the most laborious and time-consuming steps of taking down a nuclear plant. According to the New York Times, the project will bypass separating radioactive materials -- which must go to a licensed dump -- from nonradioactive materials, which can be deposited onto ordinary industrial landfills.
The NYT report says that the new strategy eliminates separating the two. Instead, anything that could include radioactive contamination will be treated as radioactive waste.
