German official seeks law to ensure decommissioning funds
The
chairman of a German commission focused on ensuring the availability of
nuclear decommissioning funds wants to pass a law to secure additional
funds. Germany's nuclear plant owners have set aside $43 billion for
decommissioning, but some believe that is insufficient. Juergen Trittin
says not getting a law done this year would potentially push action into

European Commission has found that it would cost $288.3 billion to
decommission nuclear plants and manage used nuclear fuel, which is more
than the $136.7 billion available. Only the UK has the funds to pay its
share. "Together, we should be able to identify ways to cooperate across
Europe to ensure that knowledge about the safest use of nuclear power
plants is shared, rather than done separately by each regulator, and
that the management of radioactive waste is secured financially by
member states until its final disposal," said EU Climate Action and

Atomic Safety and Licensing Board has upheld a previous ruling allowing
Entergy to run containment building leak rate tests at its Indian Point
nuclear plant in New York every 15 years. The state had advocated for a

TVA to file early site permit application for potential small reactor
The
Tennessee Valley Authority will file an early site permit application
with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission next month to have the option of
pursuing a nuclear plant using small nuclear reactors in Oak Ridge,
Tenn. If granted, the early site permit would remain in effect for 10 to
20 years and could be renewed for a subsequent 10 to 20 years,
