Chinese Military Nuke Facilities Declared Safe

The Chinese military has finished conducting emergency inspections of the nation's military nuclear installations as a response to the ongoing Japanese atomic disaster, the South China Morning Post reported on April 1 (see GSN, March 31).
"We thoroughly examined the military nuclear facilities shortly after the nuclear plant accident in Japan," Col. Cai Huailie said, referring to the situation at the Fukushima Daiichi six-reactor site, which was crippled by a massive earthquake last month (see related GSN story, today).
Every People's Liberation Army nuclear installation is secure, the colonel said.
"The Chinese armed forces have always placed great importance on the safety of military nuclear facilities. We have established strict safety protocols ... as well as a professional team of nuclear technicians," he said.
Defense Ministry spokesman Col. Geng Yansheng said the military had recently put in place a team of emergency nuclear specialists that could respond to any atomic incident.
"Once a nuclear accident takes place and goes beyond the operators' ability to control it, it will be the PLA's job to put an end to it," China Energy Net chief executive Han Xiaoping said. "Such an emergency-response mechanism would be superior than what we saw in Fukushima, where the performance of Japan's Self-Defense Forces is truly disappointing" (Ed Zhang, South China Morning Post, April 1).
