India Curbs Atomic Business With Iran
India on Saturday announced it would prohibit any business with Iran that might support the Middle Eastern nation's disputed atomic activities, Agence France-Presse reported (see GSN, April 1).The restrictions bar transfers to Iran of machinery, systems and other items that could support uranium enrichment, spent fuel reprocessing or heavy-water operations, or work on nuclear-weapon delivery vehicles, the Indian Commerce Ministry said in a statement.
The bans were included in revised international commerce regulations intended to meet the mandates of a U.N. Security Council sanctions resolution against Iran. The Security Council to date has adopted four such measures aimed at pressuring Iran to halt atomic activities that could support weapons development; Tehran has insisted its nuclear program is strictly nonmilitary in nature (Agence France-Presse/Spacedaily.com, April 2).
