U.S. Sees Pyroprocessing as Nuclear Fuel Reprocessing: Official
Tuesday, April 5, 2011
A senior U.S. State Department official last week said the Obama administration views the experimental pyroprocessing technique as a form of nuclear fuel reprocessing, potentially dimming prospects for South Korea to secure the right to use the technology in a new atomic trade pact with the United States,
Arms Control Today reported (see
GSN, Feb. 28).
The Energy Department "states frankly and positively that pyroprocessing is reprocessing. Period. Full stop," said Richard Stratford, the State Department's point man for foreign atomic trade pacts (see
GSN, March 30).
