Significant stimulus funds went to nuclear-waste cleanup
About $6 billion, or almost 20% of the Department of Energy's stimulus spending for the clean-energy sector, was spent on cleaning up nuclear-waste sites. That cleanup was primarily at the Savannah River Site in South Carolina and the Hanford complex in Washington state, accounting for about 6,100 jobs. "We were looking at specific activities that would create jobs ... shovel-ready projects that were focused on decommissioning and decontamination," Ines Triay, the department's assistant secretary for environmental management.
