DOE, NRC SCANA, TVA, US ARMY AND REACTOR VENDORS SELL OUT SMR INDUSTRY MEETING

On the 19-20 April Columbia South Carolina plays host to the Small Modular Reactor Conference. This meeting has already generated a huge buzz across the region and throughout the international nuclear community.
Attendees from Russia, mainland Europe, Asia, the Middle East and throughout the US are flocking to South Carolina’s capital in April to work on commercialization strategies and develop new partnerships that will deploy this new SMR technology as a global commercial energy solution. With experts from the DOE, NRC and senior Government officials showing their support for America’s commercial development of this technology the interest from every nuclear stakeholder in the USA is extremely strong, however America is not the only nation looking at ring fencing this new technology.

South Korean organisation KAERI, who are part of nuclear giant Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power, will be announcing the latest developments of their SMART reactor at this conference. This subject has gathered a huge amount of interest due to the rapid expansion of South Korea’s export strategy since the multi-$billion new build contracts were penned with the UAE two years ago. The development of the SMART reactor may secure Korea’s place in the SMR industry and have the nation ring-fence the SMR industry to Korean contractors and vendors. The competition between different geographic regions to produce the first commercial SMR project has resulted in a ‘space-race’ style rivalry between nations.

Due to this the conference has already sold out its primary meeting place – resulting in the summit having to secure extra space and doubling the size of the exhibition area to accommodate the international players.

Event organiser Nuclear Energy Insider stated “This conference has a global selection of the world’s finest SMR experts as well as leading senior level representatives from the US Government, DOE, NRC and hundreds of utilities and vendors in attendance. Due to this huge demand for the meeting we have had to triple the size of the conference to allow space for the 250+ attendees”.

Hosting such a senior level meeting in the Carolinas will benefit the region greatly by bringing international buyers to the doorstep of the US nuclear industry – but with only 100 remaining conference passes this meeting is set to sell out in the next 4 weeks.  Nuclear Energy Insider added “There is no doubt that SMR’s will hold the key to overcoming some of the sticking points the new build industry faces today as well as offering markets that were previously served by other energy sources a reliable supply of nuclear power. The Small Modular Reactor Conference is the only meeting that has the level of attending global stakeholders necessary for vendors and suppliers to truly crack this lucrative new market”.
