San Andreas agitation noted in recent flurry of tremors

August 9, 2011 – San Francisco – The San Andreas Fault is a continental transform fault which runs a length of roughly 810 miles (1,300 km) through California in the United States. The fault’s motion is right-lateral strike-slip (horizontal motion). The fault forms the tectonic boundary between the Pacific Plate and the North American Plate. A recent flurry of small earthquakes ranging from 2.5 magnitude to 3.4 over the last 24 hours shows agitation along the fault has increased.
