The Department of Energy is studying whether to send some of the Savannah River Site's plutonium to an underground storage facility in New Mexico that is run by the federal government. The plutonium is slated to be converted into fuel for reactors, but some of it is not suitable for fuel, said Jim Giusti, a spokesman for the department.
