– 1:30 pm

Capitol Visitor Center, SVC 203-02
In the wake of the devastating accident at the Fukushima Dai-ichi
Nuclear Power Plant in Japan last March, the United States is
re-evaluating the future of nuclear energy and the costs and benefits of
nuclear power. Almost one year later, it is still too soon to know the full
implications of this disaster for the United States and the global nuclear
energy industry.
The
Federation of American Scientists and Washington and Lee University will
release a new report, "The Future of Nuclear Power in the United States,"
to educate the public and policymakers about where nuclear power in the
United States appears to be headed despite economic challenges related to
the construction of nuclear power plants, aging reactors, and the graying
workforce.
Written
by a group of distinguished experts, the report provides insights into the
safety, security, building, financing, licensing, regulating and fueling
of nuclear power plants. Additionally, the report offers a comparison of
nuclear energy to other energy sources, and address topics such as managing
spent nuclear fuel and associated wastes, and the potential
commercialization of technologies such as small, modular reactors and
Generation IV reactors.
