The nuclear energy industry has initiated significant steps to enhance
safety at its plants since the Fukushima accident, and in 2013 all U.S.
nuclear facilities will have staged on site new and comprehensive
emergency response strategies. These added layers of safety are known as
FLEX, and it will perform key mitigating functions that will prevent
reactor damage, maintain containment integrity, and prevent damage to
fuel in spent fuel storage pools.
