I
wanted to give a heads up to members of this list about a couple of
stories that will be coming out of Idaho National Laboratory this week.
Both stories exemplify how industry can benefit from INL research
capabilities.
First, two dozen nuclear industry representatives will visit INL this week to learn more about the lab's resources and collaboration opportunities. The visit will enable industry leaders to better understand public R&D capabilities that could shape the private sector. The first-of-its-kind "industry open house" includes representatives from nine U.S. and international companies including Entergy, Huntington Ingalls Industries/Newport News Shipbuilding and the United States Enrichment Corporation (USEC). The visit was organized by the Nuclear Energy Institute, and both NEI and INL representatives will be available for interviews from 1:30 to 3 p.m. MDT Tuesday.
On Thursday, INL will announce the completion of a virtual reactor control room that is helping the industry upgrade and modernize its plants. The Human Systems Simulation Lab is a one-of-a-kind simulator that enables professional nuclear operators to test the safety and reliability of new control room designs before they're implemented in commercial nuclear power plants. The 15-panel simulator is now helping Duke Energy embark on a fleet-wide upgrade of all its plant control rooms. More information will be in a news release distributed Thursday, but let me know if you'd like to learn more in advance.
