Preliminary Design on China Third-Generation Nuclear Power Technology CAP1400 Passed National Review

On January 10, the preliminary design on China large-scale advanced PWR major project of CAP1400 passed review from National Energy Administration in Beijing, in which the overall design scheme, technical index and major parameters has been strengthened and got state-approval. From now, China’s third-generation nuclear power technology brand is starting to step forward.


SNPTC also showed that the preliminary design of CAP1400 has played an important role in absorbing world advanced technology, improving China’s overall nuclear power technology level, driving high-end equipments and industrial chain construction. At present, almost a hundred units have participated in relevant work of CAP1400. It is expected the equipment automation rate of the first CAP1400 nuclear power units will reach around 80%. A batch of test bench construction and part of key tests has been finished, in which the data gathered has effectively supported the design and safety review for CAP1400. Digital reactor protection system and key design analysis software development is stepping forward as planned. About 60% construction design of CAP1400 has been completed. According to introduction from State Nuclear Power Technology Corporation (SNPTC), CAP1400, as a national nuclear power brand, is China’s third-generation nuclear power technology with independent intellectual property rights, which is developed through re-innovation and integrated innovation by SNPTC on the basis of introducing, digesting and absorbing the Generation III American AP1000 passive technology and combination of China’s experience in nuclear power research and development design and running construction. And it was included in the national science and technology major projects in 2006. “C” is representing China and AP1400 is referred to increase power to 1400 Mw (1.4 million Kw) on the basis of 1000Mw (1 million Kw) of American AP1000. While its actual power is more than 1.5 million Kw and has been the largest passive PWR nuclear power unit in the world by far. CAP1400 follows the AP1000 advanced passive safety concept and can ensure the safety of the reactor and safe heat discharge from core decay under the condition of extreme accident without external power supply. Human intervention is not needed within 72 hours after the accident and supply ability is recovered after 72 hours. Probability of large amount of radioactivity released into the environment is less than 10-7/heap, which is 1-2 orders of magnitude than the existing Generation II technology. Through technology innovation of multiple areas, it has met the world latest nuclear safety standards and reached the world leading level.

Two CAP1400 nuclear power demonstration units are planned to be built in Rongchen, Shandong province. And its preliminary work has been approved by National Development and Reform Commission in March, 2013.
