Note to NNTG Members

Your semi-annual Nuclear Nonproliferation Technical Group (NNTG) newsletter should be forthcoming in April, but as chairman I thought I would go ahead and send a message to all members (with an embedded request).

With 123 agreements, saber-rattling in North Korea and six-party talks about Iran, it continues to be an interesting time in the field of nonproliferation.  Below I am providing some links to a sampling of articles of interest, most of which are related directly to nonproliferation.  Thanks go to Gene Carpenter, the NNTG treasurer, for bringing most of these to my attention.  In particular, I recommend the last article, an excellent piece by Fred McGoldrick and Matt Bunn on nuclear cooperation agreements that appeared in the Los Angeles Times late last year.

Now I get to the request.  I leave the chairmanship of the NNTG in June, and I would like to be able to say that I turn it over to Morris Hassler with a strengthened infrastructure.  Toward that end, I am looking for volunteers to serve in three specific capacities, outlined below.

Program Committee – Organizes paper and panel sessions for national meetings and topical meetings and works with ANS to get them scheduled.  Currently, the Program Committee consists exclusively of its chairman, Chris Robinson of Y-12.
Communications Committee – Oversees internal and external communications including the NNTG Newsletter, the website, and social media.  Currently, we have no "committee", but Michaela Hoffman handles the newsletter and Lenka Kollar handles the website and social media.
Honors and Awards Committee – Establishing an NNTG award has been discussed from time to time, and we need to move into action mode.  There is no active committee.

Our Technical Group (potentially, down the road, a Division) would be better served if these responsibilities could be spread among a group rather than placed with one or a few people.  It would help mitigate the "beer truck" syndrome, and it would give opportunities to any member who has an interest in getting more involved in NNTG activities.

Accordingly, if you have an interest in being involved in any one (or more) of these areas, please let me know by e-mail at steve.nesbit@duke-energy.com .  I hasten to add that in today's virtual world you do not have to attend the national meetings in order to support these activities.

Thanks for your consideration of these opportunities, and be on the lookout for the next NNTG Newsletter in a month or so.
