US Industry Response to the Fukushima Daiichi Accident
Four years after the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident in Japan, the
U.S. nuclear energy industry has taken substantive action to enhance an
already robust safety system at nuclear energy facilities. The industry
since 2011 has worked through a special committee comprised of chief
nuclear officers to catalogue the detailed facts about the accident and
apply lessons learned at U.S. reactors. Key industry actions include the
installation of additional backup safety equipment and ongoing training
of plant personnel to respond safely to extreme natural events. In
2014, the industry opened national response centers in Memphis and
Phoenix that can deliver additional safety equipment and resources to
any U.S. nuclear power plant within 24 hours.
