Nuclear power needs government subsidies, but struggles to make the case for them
Nuclear
power needs government subsidies, but struggles to make the case for them,
Houston Chronicle (column), April 16, 2015. Chris Tomlinson: "Subsidies
and incentives, though, are problematic. The Republican-controlled
Congress and the Republican-controlled
Texas Legislature are openly hostile to subsidies for wind and solar
energy and want to phase them out. Now is not the time to ask for
additional subsidies for nuclear power. But even if the political mood
were more sympathetic, historically, government incentives
were designed to help new technologies get started, not to underwrite
existing businesses that are not competitive. Instead of spending
billions helping nuclear power, those dollars might better be spent on
new energy storage technologies for renewable power
or even more advanced nuclear technologies." Chris Tomlinson is a business columnist for the Houston Chronicle.
