U.S. Could Test Deep-Hole Nuclear Waste Burial In 2016, According To British Reports

Burying nuclear waste in very deep drilled holes that go below the reach of water that could return to the surface of the Earth could be given a test run in the United States in 2016, according to the University of Sheffield’s Engineering Department.

In an article posted on the British university's Web site, the university says, “the concept – called deep borehole disposal – has been developed primarily in the UK but is likely to see its first field trials in the USA next year.”

The article does not say who or what department in the United States is on board with the trial burials, but The Engineer, a British magazine, says the U.S. trial is “being run by Sandia National Laboratories for the Department of Energy.” Confirmation from Sandia could not be confirmed at the hour of this writing.
