Last week, I attended the White House Summit on Nuclear Energy that underscored the Obama Administration's commitment to fight climate change with the help of the country's existing nuclear plants.
Our current nuclear fleet is critical to helping us achieve a cleaner energy future and produces over 60 percent of our nation's carbon-free electricity. Together with other renewables, like solar and wind, we can count on clean and reliable nuclear energy as a driver towards a low-carbon economy.
However, the U.S. nuclear fleet is facing premature closures that will make it difficult for us to meet our carbon-cutting goals. We are hopeful that events like this one can help policymakers and the public understand why preserving our nuclear plants is so important to our energy mix and the health of our planet.
