Battelle to study disposal of radioactive waste
The U.S. Department of Energy has selected a team led by Battelle Memorial Institute to be part of an effort that, among other things, aims to explore locations for disposal of certain radioactive wastes. In a news release, the institution said the team will drill a test borehole of over 16,000 feet into a crystalline basement rock formation near Rugby, N.D.
The test will provide insights into crosscutting subsurface science and engineering challenges such as drilling techniques, wellbore stability and sealing, and subsurface characterization.
