Diablo Canyon gets top marks from NRC
A day after announcing plans to
shutter the state's last operating nuclear power plant, Pacific Gas
& Electric Co. received its yearly report card for Diablo Canyon
Power Plant from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, which concluded the
nuclear plant ranks among the top facilities of its kind in the country.
During
a public meeting Wednesday in San Luis Obispo, the federal oversight
agency also concluded that in 2015 and the first half of this year, the
twin-reactor plant was operated by the electric company in a "manner
that protected public health and safety" and met the NRC's cornerstone
safety objectives.
"The NRC's
assessment places Diablo Canyon among the higher performing plants in
the U.S. nuclear industry," said Blair Jones, Diablo Canyon public
information officer. "This reflects the hard work and dedication of our
talented employees and our commitment to meeting PG&E's and the
NRC's high performance standards."
