From Gene Nelson: All: I've aggregated and sorted some fault crossing tables prepared for
ReplyDeletethe 2008 "Shake Out Scenario."
These tables validate that Southern California's Energy and Water
Lifelines will be severely disrupted - likely for a long time after a
large rupture of the southern section of the San Andreas Fault. Natural
gas pipelines and aqueducts will be particularly hard hit.
California's two large nuclear power plants were designed to withstand any
credible earthquake.
For the safety and welfare of southern California, Diablo Canyon should
continue to operate well beyond 2025 and SONGS should be re-commissioned
to provide life-sustaining electricity - and providing power to desalinate
seawater to provide safe, clean drinking water while the aqueducts are
repaired. As a first step, Diablo Canyon's desalination plant should be
expanded by at least 100-fold to provide drinking water for the region
near the plant.
