U.S. Senate Begins Debate on FY 2021 NDAA
The U.S. Senate voted last week to invoke cloture on the motion to proceed to S.4049, the FY 2021 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). Debate on the legislation could take all week with hundreds of amendments already filed to the bill.
As expected, Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) filed an amendment which will look to include the Nuclear Energy Leadership Act (NELA) requiring
the Secretary of Energy to provide for a versatile, reactor-based fast
neutron source and establish advanced nuclear reactor research and
development goals, a nuclear energy strategic plan, an advanced nuclear
fuel security program, and a university nuclear leadership program.
In a recent letter -
Senator Murkowksi, Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ), and 20
additional bipartisan Senators urged the inclusion of NELA within the FY
2021 NDAA.
