Dear Friends,
As
we are wrapping up a busy semester, it will be hard to say good-bye to
our senior undergraduate students as they head home for Thanksgiving.
All students will be continuing the semester remotely until the end of
classes.
Our seniors have done amazing work in the design class, 22.033,
developing creative and pioneering solutions for decarbonizing
Ulaanbaatar. I cannot wait to see how the final project comes together.
The graduate design course in fusion, 22.63, has been full steam ahead
this term as well, with both remote learning and in-person elements, as
the teams look ahead to smaller, faster fusion. Our first-year graduate
student module class, 22.11, also had a successful hybrid offering. The
rest of the semester, even though remote, is bound to be fast-paced and
exciting.
While we are away from campus, here are some upcoming department events
to engage in: Please join us for the final class presentations for
22.033 on December 9, with Prof. Mike Short and for 22.63 on December
10, with Prof. Dennis Whyte. We will post details on the NSE website in December.
I am delighted to announce that Dr. Cong Su, PhD ’19,
now at the University of California, Berkeley, is the winner of the 2020
Del Favero Thesis Prize. Dr. Su will give the prize lecture on December
3, “Atomic Engineering — Controlling Atoms with Electron Irradiation
for Quantum Devices”. Congratulations, Cong Su! The Del Favero Thesis
Prize, established in 2014 with a generous gift from alum James Del
Favero SM ’84, is awarded annually to a PhD graduate in NSE whose thesis
is judged to have made the most innovative advance in our field. Please join us for the lecture.
Despite being remote, our community is strong. The new NSE DEI Committee
is established and will help build departmental initiatives. The ANS
Student Group in NSE will be hosting a virtual screening of the film “Picture a Scientist” later
this semester, providing another opportunity to continue discussion of
diversity in our field. And our third annual NSE Winter School will take
place in early 2021, with some updates for the virtual world. This
program, about demystifying the nuclear field and the mechanics of
graduate school, is for promising undergraduate scholars with an
interest in applying to NSE.
Please continue to stay in touch and connect with fellow students, staff, faculty.
Wishing you all the best for the upcoming holiday season,
Anne
