Discharging the water into the Pacific Ocean over the course of a year would amount to between just one-1,600th and one-40,000th of the radiation to which humans are naturally exposed, the Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry, or METI, told a government subcommittee on the issue.
Water used to cool the melted-down cores and groundwater from close to the damaged facility contain some radioactive materials. It is being collected and stored in tanks on the plant grounds, but space is running out and the government is exploring ways to deal with the waste water — which already totals more than 1 million tonnes with the volume increasing by more than 100 tonnes every day.

According to the report, the current structure of the supply chain for medical radioisotopes leaves some participants unable to increase the prices of their services to levels that would cover costs.
The discontinuation of government funding would compel producers to increase prices. This could destabilise supply in the short-term and would need to be accompanied, at least temporarily, by measures to help ensure that price increases are passed on through the supply chain.

the NRC to conduct a more detailed environmental impact statement on
whether the 50-year-old Westinghouse nuclear fuel factory in Richland
County, S.C., should continue to operate for another 40 years. The NRC
had reported earlier that the plant was safe enough to operate another
four decades after its license expires in 2027.
