World Nuclear Energy Day December 2, 2020

Re: Announcing Launch of World Nuclear Energy Day

Hello friends of Nuclear Energy and the overall Nuclear Power market

Today I write with excitement about the launch of "World Nuclear Energy Day", a day for celebrating the benefits of nuclear energy and the people who make it happen.

About World Nuclear Energy Day
People around the globe will celebrate the virtues and benefits of nuclear energy, open their shops for tours (both virtual and physical), discuss new technologies, and work to include nuclear energy in legislation at the local, regional, national and international levels.

The Hashtag is #WorldNuclearEnergyDay

Why December 2, 2020?
December 2, 2020 was selected as the first inaugural World Nuclear Energy Day to acknowledge BOTH the first date of a self-sustaining chain reaction and also the date of the start-up of the first USA electric power reactor. Fermi’s first nuclear reactor named the Chicago Pile-1 became the first to create a self-sustaining chain reaction on December 2, 1942. In addition, the first USA reactor in Shippingport, Pennsylvania also went critical on December 2nd, 1957; exactly 15 years later on the same day.

World Nuclear Energy Day aims to create awareness and drive cogeneration literacy while also improving the teaching of energy efficiency, resilience, sustainability, power technology, carbon reduction and more generally, the "celebration of nuclear energy and the people who make it happen".

This event has been established by an organizing committee of industry leaders (see web site https://worldnuclearenergyday.org) to bring participants closer to exemplary nuclear energy projects having a good educational and community outreach program.

Share the Passion for Nuclear Energy
For nuclear energy advocates and leaders, World Nuclear Energy Day is an opportunity for both the technical nuclear community and their business development peers to share in their mutual passion while preserving and promoting relationships, traditions and shared memories. Swing open the doors (both virtually and physically) and have some fun while also educating those who attend.

COVID-19 Theme for This Year
We celebrate this one day on a world-wide basis because some challenges have to be met with a global response. Celebrants take to the streets, internet, offices, power plants and airwaves to teach us what is obvious, that there will be no future for us if we destroy the environment that sustains us. This one day helps us all to also pursue a "green recovery" in response to the coronavirus; showing that healthy energy supplies enable healthy environments.

The website, www.WorldNuclearEnergyDay.org will maintain information about this global project and tip off those wishing to organize events. Individual open day organizers are encouraged to check back for event details. Open day organizers can download a range of promotional collateral from the website including press releases for local media, tweetables, flyers and online banners. Event and brand logos will be made available via the main website https://worldnuclearenergyday.org

NSE Nuclear Science & Engineering at MIT science: systems: society

Dear Friends,

As we are wrapping up a busy semester, it will be hard to say good-bye to our senior undergraduate students as they head home for Thanksgiving. All students will be continuing the semester remotely until the end of classes.

Our seniors have done amazing work in the design class, 22.033, developing creative and pioneering solutions for decarbonizing Ulaanbaatar. I cannot wait to see how the final project comes together. The graduate design course in fusion, 22.63, has been full steam ahead this term as well, with both remote learning and in-person elements, as the teams look ahead to smaller, faster fusion. Our first-year graduate student module class, 22.11, also had a successful hybrid offering. The rest of the semester, even though remote, is bound to be fast-paced and exciting.

While we are away from campus, here are some upcoming department events to engage in: Please join us for the final class presentations for 22.033 on December 9, with Prof. Mike Short and for 22.63 on December 10, with Prof. Dennis Whyte. We will post details on the NSE website in December.

I am delighted to announce that Dr. Cong Su, PhD ’19, now at the University of California, Berkeley, is the winner of the 2020 Del Favero Thesis Prize. Dr. Su will give the prize lecture on December 3, “Atomic Engineering — Controlling Atoms with Electron Irradiation for Quantum Devices”. Congratulations, Cong Su! The Del Favero Thesis Prize, established in 2014 with a generous gift from alum James Del Favero SM ’84, is awarded annually to a PhD graduate in NSE whose thesis is judged to have made the most innovative advance in our field. Please join us for the lecture.

Despite being remote, our community is strong. The new NSE DEI Committee is established and will help build departmental initiatives. The ANS Student Group in NSE will be hosting a virtual screening of the film “Picture a Scientist” later this semester, providing another opportunity to continue discussion of diversity in our field. And our third annual NSE Winter School will take place in early 2021, with some updates for the virtual world. This program, about demystifying the nuclear field and the mechanics of graduate school, is for promising undergraduate scholars with an interest in applying to NSE.

Please continue to stay in touch and connect with fellow students, staff, faculty.

Wishing you all the best for the upcoming holiday season,

Anne

The American Nuclear Infrastructure Act Introduced in Senate

U.S. Senator John Barrasso (R-WY), chairman of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, and Senators Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), Mike Crapo (R-ID), and Cory Booker (D-NJ) introduced bipartisan legislation to revitalize the United States’ nuclear infrastructure. S.4897, the American Nuclear Infrastructure Act of 2020 (ANIA), will enable U.S. international leadership, preserve America’s nuclear fuel supply chain, reduce carbon emissions, and strengthen our economic, energy, and national security.

On April 23, 2020, the Department of Energy released its report titled, “Restoring America’s Competitive Nuclear Energy Advantage.” The report found the decline of our industrial nuclear supply capabilities threatens our national interest and national security. The report recommends actions that will set the United States back on the right track. ANIA implements the report's key recommendations.
