NEI sees flaws in blanket requirement to install filtered vents
A
Nuclear Energy Institute executive identified deficiencies in a
proposal by Nuclear Regulatory Commission technical staff to require GE
Mark I and Mark II reactor designs to install filtered vents, saying the
units are already equipped with filtration capabilities. "To suggest
that there's no filtering being done is incorrect," said Tony
Pietrangelo, senior vice president and chief nuclear officer at NEI. The
agency should instead study the installation of new hardware to
eliminate the need for filters or to prevent radioactive gas releases
from reactors, according to NEI. EENews.net/Greenwire (subscription required)
