ASEAN to Court Nuclear Powers on Backing Nuke-Free Zone
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations on Tuesday prepared position statements aimed at convincing the five recognized nuclear powers to endorse a nuclear weapon-free zone covering the region, the Jakarta Post reported (see GSN, July 19, 2010).The 1995 Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone pact obligates signatories "not to develop, manufacture or otherwise acquire, possess or have control over atomic weapons" and prohibits the storage and transport of such armaments in ASEAN states, according to an earlier report.
