SCE&G Receives Revised Safety Review Schedule

CAYCE, S.C., Aug 03, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- South Carolina Electric & Gas Company (SCE&G), principal subsidiary of SCANA Corporation /quotes/zigman/254036/quotes/nls/scg SCG +0.44% , has received a letter from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Office of New Reactors outlining an updated schedule for issuance of the Final Safety Evaluation Report for VC Summer Units 2 and 3.
In the letter, the NRC staff concluded that SCE&G's application for a combined operating license is complete. The revised schedule supports the issuance of the Final Safety Evaluation Report (FSER) in September 2011. As the NRC letter stated "The objective for completion of the mandatory hearing, including issuance of a final Commission decision, should be no later than four months from the issuance of the later of the FSER or Final Environmental Impact Statement for the COL."
The NRC is currently reviewing DCD revision 19 submitted by Westinghouse in June 2011. After the NRC's review is complete, the FSER for the AP1000 certified design will be issued. Following that, the NRC will conduct a rulemaking process. Issuance of the COL is subject to completion of the rulemaking process.
"The issuance by the NRC of the schedule for approval of VC Summer's COL application provides additional clarity toward the issuance of our license," said Bill Timmerman, Chairman and CEO of SCANA. "As the timetable outlined in Tuesday's NRC letter suggests, we remain confident that we will receive our COL within our previously announced timeframe of late 2011 or early 2012."
